New England 2021

Updated: Apr 26, 2022

A friend was having her wedding up in New Jersey. Shruthi and I decided to make a short New England trip out of the occasion by flying into Rhode Island, working there for a few days, and exploring before road tripping through Connecticut, New Jersey, and finally Pennsylvania.

We flew into Boston and rented a car to drive down to our Airbnb in Newport, Rhode Island. The rental car was obscenely expensive but well worth it for the amount we would need it. We rented a little loft over a bar in the heart of downtown. Excellent decision since we were walkable to so many restaurants and bars.

During our lunch break we took a quick stroll through the downtown streets. There were tons of shops and restaurants around. I tried to spot as many fall colors as I could but lots of trees have already shed their leaves. Nevertheless, the photo opportunities were bountiful.

Rhode Island is known for its old money and mansions. The architecture and sheer size of those mansions were so cool to see and photograph. We continued finishing up our work day before going to Tavern, the bar under our Airbnb for dinner and drinks. Some of the best chicken wings I've had in a long while. Some ladies also complimented Shruthi's outfit too. Super fun evening and it made me happy to know we made the right call in booking the airbnb above this bar.

The next morning we work up super early to do a cliff walk. On our way to the tailhead, we stopped for some quick photos during the sunrise at a nearby lake. The sun was just beginning to rise and the light on the water looked amazing.

We continued to the trailhead, parked, and began our walk. The sun created some super harsh reflections on the water on the beach. I loved the way the water crashed up on the rocks.

After finishing the cliff walk and our work day, we decided to head to a vineyard nearby for some drinks. We each got a flight tasting. The wine was great but we had some cider that quickly became some of our favorite cider we've ever had.

I took this day as PTO so I could spend the day exploring the city and taking more film photos. I started just walking down our street again and taking photos of interesting buildings and the fall foliage. Then I made my way to the water where I took photos of boats and the docks. I thought this scenery was very fitting for film. I wish the light wasn't as harsh since it was midday but nevertheless I thought the quaint nature of the city worked so well on film. I also love photographing boats on film as well since I think they fit the vibes well.

We then started our road trip down to Connecticut. These are a few shots on took in the car to kill a roll of film. I really like how they came out for just a few throwaway shots.

We stopped for some coffee in Essex, another small quaint town. I love the slow and chill vibes of this place. Easy-going, simple, calm.

We made it down to Ivoryton to visit a law school friend who bought a house out there. Her name is Ali and she lives in an vintage cottage with her dog and 2 cats. Her place was so picturesque. A perfect window into the small town, New England life.

After catching up and doing some work, I took a little stroll around Ali's house and on a little path through the forest. Here's a video I put together detailing my experience as well as the accompanying photos:

Today we woke up, and had some breakfast Ali was nice enough to cook for us before heading up to New Jersey for the wedding. She made pop-overs, something I have never heard of. They are basically soufflé crossed with pastries and they were delicious. Also her dog, Mia, was so cute.

I didn't take my film camera to the wedding but it was a ton of fun. Congrats Madison and Brian! We crashed at a nearby Ramada Inn.

Our last day of the trip, we drove a few hours to Philadelphia. I was excited to try an authentic Philly cheese steak. We parked downtown and proceeded to just walk around and sight see. The city gave me NYC feels. Cramped, busy, rushed.

We ventured to Reading Terminal Market to grab some coffee. The coffee we got was insanely hot so we bought some ice cream to mix it with to make affogato.

After exploring downtown Philly, we made it back to the car, drove to the airport and flew on home. One of my favorite domestic trips I've ever taken. Complete with tons and tons of film. :)
